Practical approach to understanding the nature of science. The exercises on cells, tissues, and organ systems are designed to help students understand the human systems.

Human specimens, models and interactive software are used to study human body structures; emphasis is on the skeleto-muscular aspects. The purpose of this course is to aid students in acquiring a basic understanding of, and new appreciation for, the structures of the human body and their relationships using a systems-based approach. Students will be introduced to anatomic terminology in order to facilitate this understanding. Knowledge of anatomy is a fundamental component of any health care profession, as well as many other disciplines in biology.

General survey of microorganisms that cause human diseases. The mechanisms of body defense and immunity to infectious agents are discussed. Study of culture methods, microscopic sterilization, and aseptic techniques.

The study of nutrients needed for healthy functioning of human beings and the biochemical functions of these nutrients in the body. The nutrient content of foods and its application to meal planning. Special nutritional needs of infants, pregnant women, nursing mothers and the elderly.

A study of the fundamental principles of chemistry, including the structure of matter, the periodic table, energy relations, and the chemistry of the common elements and their compounds.

Introduction to computers and information processing. Primary emphasis is placed on three standard applications: Word Processing, Spreadsheet, and Data Base.

This course emphasizes the process of critical thinking, reading, and writing. Student writing progresses from a personal to an academic perspective. Students write for different audiences and purposes using a variety of rhetorical strategies. Students write in response to readings and are introduced to standard documentation procedures.

Introduction to Health Informatics offers an overview of the field of health informatics by providing students with the fundamental knowledge of the concepts of health informatics and how technology can be used in the delivery of health care.

This course includes computation using integers, fractions, decimals, proportions, and percent along with an overview of measurement, geometry, statistics, and linear equations. Fundamentals of Math provides the mathematical foundation upon which subsequent studies in mathematics and other areas depend.

This course introduces prefixes, suffixes, and word roots used in the language of medicine. Topics include medical vocabulary and the terms that relate to the anatomy, physiology, pathological conditions, and treatment of selected systems. Upon completion, students should be able to pronounce, spell and define medical terms as related to selected body systems and their pathological disorders.

The course involves the study of the functioning of human tissues, organs and organ systems, emphasizing the physical, chemical and mechanistic bases of normal physiology and the integrated function of the human body. The course also introduces pathophysiological changes associated with human diseases.

Introduction to the scientific study of human behavior and mental processes. Emphasis on theoretical approaches, concepts, principles, and research findings. Overview of selected areas in psychology that provides the foundation for further study in psychology. Topics include critical thinking, neuroscience, nature/nurture, consciousness, motivation, work, stress and health, and psychological disorders.

Comprehensive study of the psychological development of the individual, including linguistic, social, personality, and cognitive aspects of development from conception through late adulthood.

Introduction to the basic perspectives, concepts, and principles of sociology, with emphasis on basic social processes such as social organization, culture, socialization, deviance, and inequality. Study of the functioning and influences of major social groups, such as the family and government. Application of the principles to understanding everyday life.

An exploration of the use of statistics in the world around us through in-depth case studies. Emphasis is on understanding statistical studies, charts, tables, and graphs frequently seen in various media sources. Some lectures involve activities centered on case studies.

This course prepares the student to provide basic patient care under the supervision of a licensed nurse. Students learn and apply caregiving skills in lab and professional settings. Students seeking employment in any healthcare field will find this a valuable first step! Units of study and skills include human development, infection control, vital signs, phlebotomy, patient transfer, bed making, body in health and disease, personal care and hygiene, nutrition, and special care.

The purpose of this undergraduate level course is to learn about the epidemiology and biology of HIV/AIDS and the community response to the epidemic, with an emphasis on translating scientific findings into primary (preventing HIV infection in those who are uninfected) and secondary (preventing development of HIV disease in those who are HIV-infected) prevention practices. We will explore the social, medical, and political correlates and consequences of the HIV epidemic through in class discussions, assigned readings, and guest lectures. Additional courses are designed to give an overview of select issues in tropical medicine. Specific tropical diseases and case studies stressing diagnosis will be highlighted. Emphasis will be on the control and prevention of tropical diseases and basic pathogenic mechanisms of selected infectious diseases that continue to be of major public health importance. Students will be introduced to both clinical and environmental aspects of public health and disease control and will acquire a working knowledge of the biology of these diseases, including prospects for effective management and control at both the personal and public health level. This course provides a foundation for students interested in the allied health field. Emphasis is on analyzing word parts and learning basic prefixes, suffixes, and word roots. The course also highlights the body systems: basic anatomy and physiology, including terms used in diseases and surgical procedures.

This course introduces the student to theories that apply to the practice of patient education in a variety of health care settings. Emphasis is placed on education for health promotion and lifestyle changes. Patient Health Education will introduce the student to the practice of patient education, with particular emphasis on behavior modification (i.e., the use of teaching, learning, and motivational theories to support patient adherence and outcomes). This course will focus on the role of the health educator in teaching patients to maintain optimal health and become independent in self‐care activities. Course content will address the basic foundations of the health education process, the unique needs and characteristics of learners in the patient role, a survey of instructional strategies appropriate for health educators (i.e., teachers) and patients (i.e., learners), patient health literacy and its implications for health education programming, and health education evaluation methodology.

This course will include a review of essential math concepts for dosage calculation including fractions, percentages, ratios, measurements, and conversions. Practice and assessment tests will include problems featuring medication administration, including oral, intravenous, and parenteral routes.

Purpose of the course is to introduce nursing concepts to nursing majors prior to admission into the upper-division nursing program. The course focuses on nursing as a caring profession, nurse’s roles and functions, ethics, standards, legal aspects, holism, wellness, health care delivery, communication, teaching/learning, critical thinking, and the nursing process.

This course builds on the biopsychosocial sciences and focuses on development of knowledge, skills and techniques necessary for history-taking and physical examination in adults. Students are introduced to the nursing process and diagnostic reasoning skills are developed through analysis and documentation of assessment data. A laboratory experience provides opportunities for students to integrate communication and problem-solving skills with the health assessment process. The course focuses on the healthy adult patient and emphasizes the diversity of patient populations in health care settings.

3 lecture, 90 laboratory hours and 60 clinical hours. (3 credits lecture, 3 credits laboratory and 2 credits clinical). This course introduces classic nursing principles that underpin future clinical practice. Principles include such things as comfort measures, assistance with daily living activities, environmental concerns, positioning and transporting, asepsis and sterile technique, medication administration, intrusive therapies and use of the nursing process with particular emphasis on the intervention component. The majority of the theoretical information is provided through an online environment. Concepts related to nursing fundamentals and nursing care is integrated throughout the course. The campus laboratory and clinical settings will afford practical experience in application of the principles and skills taught in the theory portion of this class. Students will be expected to demonstrate beginning competency in application of the nursing process..

Pharmacology focuses on the basic drug classification, concepts and principles of pharmacology with special consideration for the nursing role in developing a comprehensive approach to the clinical application of drug therapy through the use of the nursing process. Nursing implications relative to the utilization of drug therapy are examined.

The purpose of this course is to introduce the student to laboratory tests that are commonly ordered by physician. This includes the name of the test, its clinical significance, and the correlation of results with disease states. Clinical decision making for selecting appropriate tests or procedures, and interpretation of diagnostic test results is also addressed.

Examines the health needs of women across the life span with an emphasis on the health needs of the childbearing family. Applies nursing process, theory and research with an emphasis on the development of critical thinking skills in the diagnosis and treatment of human responses to health needs of women, neonates and families. Practices clinical skills and applies theoretical knowledge in selected ambulatory care settings for women's health and post-discharge care, and hospital settings for antenatal, intrapartum, post-partum and neonatal experiences.

Focuses on application of evidence, nursing process, communication skills and critical thinking when providing nursing to children. Incorporates standards of care for both well and ill children in the provision of care.

3 lecture hours. 3 credits. This overview course focuses on the knowledge and skills required to enact evidence-based practice over one's professional life. Students will examine the relevance of nursing research to evidence-based practice as they review important research concepts and identify factors affecting utilization of evidence in practice. The course formally introduces a model for evidence-based practice with an emphasis on the components of searching for, appraising and synthesizing best evidence.

Examines theoretical, empirical and practical knowledge applied to the prevention and treatment of common psychiatric and mental health conditions encountered in basic nursing practice. Provides students with an integrative perspective from which to incorporate various frameworks of knowledge into practice. Provides didactic knowledge and clinical learning experiences to facilitate students' understanding of actual and potential psychiatric illnesses and mental health problems in individuals, families and communities.

Explores theory and evidence relevant to the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of communities and populations. Incorporates epidemiological principles to population-focused nursing and emphasizes the study and application of community health nursing roles for health promotion and disease prevention. Evaluates the impact of health policy on the public’s health. Designs an evidence-based service-learning project to address the health care needs of at-risk populations.

Provides theoretical and evidence-based foundations for nursing management and related therapeutic regimens. This course provides students with the foundations for critically analyzing ethical dilemmas in nursing practice. Ethical theories including moral developmental theories will be discussed. The course will help students to clarify values and promote moral reflection in the context of contemporary health-care challenges. Emerging issues as involving emerging technologies and political, legal, socio-economic, and fiscal factors will be examined.

This course provides students the opportunity to apply critical thinking, nursing theory, research, and practice to specific perioperative concepts and situations. Varied roles of the nurse in the perioperative area will be explored as well as the role of the nurse in the interdisciplinary team.

Integrates principles of leadership and management to prepare students for management, coordination and implementation of safe and ethical patient care in contemporary health care delivery systems.
